Sun Metals has started the tendering process for the $300 million expansion of its zinc refinery operations in Townsville.
The first tender, relating to the civil works, has gone out and closes on January 31.
The expansion is expected to create 350 jobs during construction, and up to 100 ongoing jobs covering refinery, transport and logistics opportunities.
The work is expected to be complete in early 2021 and will allow Sun Metals to lift zinc production from about 220,000 to 270,000 tonnes per year.
Townsville Stadium builder Watpac has been seeking pricing from subcontractors and suppliers, indicating it will be among those tendering for work on the project.
“As is the case with any local project, if there is an opportunity to be a part of what will be a great project for the region than we will look to do so,” said Watpac Northern Area manager Bryan Glancy.
“Like all projects there is a tendering process which we are undertaking at the moment and this includes identifying local businesses and subcontractors we could work with should we be successful in being awarded the contract.
“Our priority, for all projects we deliver in the region, is to create opportunities for local businesses to be a part of the construction journey.”
