Explorers will soon be on the hunt for Queensland gas to supply exclusively to local manufacturers.
The State Government announced today that tenders have opened for an 18sq km area of land in the Surat Basin gas fields.
The Government has stipulated that any gas produced from successful exploration can only be sold to an Australian manufacturer.
“We know that an industry affected by the nation’s domestic gas shortage has been manufacturing – an industry which has been crying out for a stable, reliable gas supply,” Energy Minister Anthony Lynham said.
“Once again, Queensland is doing the heavy lifting on gas policy (and) stepping up to provide a boost to our manufacturing industry by supplying gas they need.”
Dr Lynham announced Australia’s first release of gas land to supply only the domestic market in February last year.
Since then, almost another 25,000sq km has been released in Queensland for gas exploration, almost a third of it for the domestic market only.
The latest block to go to tender is 22km south-west of Chinchilla.
Tenders for the exploration area close on March 14 next year.
