Queensland planners sweep national awards

Queensland planners have dominated the National Awards for Planning Excellence, taking out six of the 12 categories. Winners were announced at the Planning Institute of Australia’s first virtual awards presentation livestreamed on YouTube. Queenslanders won the awards for Planner of the Year; Great Place; Public Engagement and Community Planning; Hard Won Victory; Improving Planning Processes and Practices; and Best Planning Ideas (Small), as well as a commendation for Cutting Edge Research and Teaching. The awards went to people and projects spanning the length and breadth of Queensland, from the Gold Coast to Cairns. They included National Planner of the Year Nikki Huddy, recognised for her advocacy of planning in the media and for demonstrating a high level of community connectedness. Ms Huddy (pictured below) also plays an important mentor role for young regional planners, has lectured at James Cook University, is a committee member of the TNQ PIA branch, is a Registered Planner, Fellow of PIA and Queensland’s inaugural 2019 Queensland Woman in Planning Award.
