Barry Omundson has been appointed as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of Whitsunday Regional Council at a special meeting held this morning in Bowen.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said that Mr Omundson, who has been acting in the role since September 2015, was appointed following an extensive recruitment process that attracted a very strong and capable list of candidates from across Australia.
“Having served in senior leadership roles in both local government and the private sector, Barry has demonstrated his ability to effectively manage large, complex teams and build cooperative relationships across government, industry, business and community,” Cr Willcox said.
“In his eight months as acting CEO, Barry has already made a strong contribution to council and has made significant progress in driving positive cultural change within the organisation.”
Mr Omundson is a qualified engineer and holds a Master of Business Administration from Southern Cross University.
His previous roles include Mackay Regional Council CEO, director of infrastructure at Maranoa Regional Council and executive manager for operations at Cradle Mountain Water.
Mr Omundson said he was looking forward to continuing to work with the mayor, councillors, staff and community in his new role as permanent CEO.
“Council faces enormous opportunities and has a bright future ahead, and I’m proud to be leading such a professional and hard-working group of staff as we work towards implementing the mayor’s and councillors’ vision for a strong, prosperous and inclusive Whitsunday Region,” he said.
