New Hope leads way on workplace wellbeing

New Hope Group's New Acland Mine health and wellness program - Live Well, Work Well - has won a national award. New Hope was awarded the Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA) 2016 Industry Award for Health and Wellbeing at a ceremony in Perth last night. The New Acland Mine health and wellness program was implemented in 2014 and encourages employees to self-manage their health while facilitating lifestyle changes. New Hope managing director Shane Stephan said he was immensely proud of the achievement as it was a tough competition. “Our New Acland program sets itself apart from other organisations through encouraging employees to be the drivers of the program," he said. “A company is only as good as its employees so it makes sense to focus on supporting the physical and mental health of our workforce. New Hope Group managing director Shane Stephan and safety and training co-ordinator Stewart Sherrington at the award ceremony. “Our employees have had terrific success with more than 78 per cent making significant positive changes to their health.” New Acland safety and training co-ordinator Stewart Sherrington said partnering with allied health professionals had been vital. “Working closely with Toowoomba’s LiveWell Australia has enabled us to really educate and engage with our employees about the long-term benefits of positive health choices,” he said. “We were pretty chuffed to win the Queensland Safe Work Award for Best Workplace Health and Wellness Initiative for this program last year, so to win a national award is just fantastic. “LiveWell has helped us to deliver weekly physiotherapy clinics, toolbox talks about healthy choices and a site-wide weight loss challenge that saw a combined total of 241kg lost. “Our latest initiative is called My Tucker Box Rules and we’ve created a great rivalry on site about who can prepare the best and healthiest lunch.” The ninth annual AMMA Industry Awards took place at Fraser’s Kings Park in Perth on Thursday evening following the AMMA National Conference, which explored workforce and employment matters across Australia’s resource industry. AMMA chief executive Steve Knott said the awards demonstrated a commitment to improving workplace practices for the benefit of the industry and the wider community. “People are the backbone of the resource industry. The leadership and innovation displayed by resource employers across workforce areas such as training, diversity, and health and wellbeing is what underpins our industry as a pillar of the national economy,” Mr Knott said. “This goes hand-in-hand with ensuring our industry is one that the brightest minds in this country gravitate to; where career opportunities are rewarding and where employee wellbeing is top priority. “The record number of award nominations received this year is testament to the resource industry’s ongoing commitment to workforce and operational excellence in the face of challenging market conditions.” The 2016 AMMA Industry Award winners are: Indigenous Employment & Retention Award: Fortescue Metals Group’s ‘Trade Up’ Program Training & Development: The Mancala Group Workforce Innovation Award: Compass Group’s ‘Village Life’ Program Health & Wellbeing Award: New Hope Group’s ‘Live Well, Work Well’ Program Australian Women in Resources Alliance (AWRA) Award: Australian Rail Track Corporation Young Professional Award: Joint winners Annie Martyn, Turnaround Execution Coordinator with Viva Energy Australia Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Employment Program Manager with Wirrpanda Foundation
