The Department of Transport and Main Roads is looking at adding overtaking lanes on the Kennedy Highway between Cairns and Mareeba after a safety audit.
A department spokeswoman said a planning study to identify the most suitable locations for additional overtaking lanes was expected to be complete by late October 2018.
“TMR is also conducting a study to develop a Heavy Vehicle Management Strategy (HVMS) for the Atherton Tablelands area that will identify sites for break-down areas,” she said.
“It will also locate suitable sites to allow enforcement of traffic and vehicle regulations on freight and identify potential sites for heavy vehicle rest areas as part of TMR’s integrated approach to fatigue management.
“This study is expected to be complete by mid 2019.”
The spokeswoman said TMR had completed eight road safety upgrades worth $5.7 million on Tablelands roads as part of the 2017 Safer Roads Sooner Program.
These works included the installation of an overtaking lane between Mareeba and Cairns and safety upgrades to six intersections between Kuranda and Mareeba.
