Milestone event for coal prep society

The Australian Coal Preparation Society (ACPS) kicked off its 50th year of operation during the group’s recent biennial conference and exhibition.

Optimising your Coal & Asset Resources” was the theme for the technical conference held over four days at the Novotel Wollongong.

More than 300 people attended including delegates and exhibitors from the USA, China and Japan as well as coal preparation engineers, operators and industry experts from Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.

ACPS national chairman Glen Fewings said the conference technical papers and presentations had focused on new and improved processing techniques at the cutting edge of modern coal preparation.

“Delegates not only participated in high quality and informative technical sessions, the local organising committee also organised two technical tours for participants – one to West Cliff coal handling preparation plant and the other to BlueScope and Port Kembla,” he said.

Mr Fewings said the society was proud to reach the 50-year milestone, coming from humble beginnings as the Coal Preparation Society of NSW.

The inaugural meeting of the Coal Preparation Society of NSW was held at the School of Mining Engineering, University of New South Wales, on March 16, 1966.

Mr Fewings said the Coal Preparation Society of Queensland followed soon after in 1967, with the assistance of the Queensland Coal Owners’ Association.
