Making ends meet in $193m Port of Townsville upgrade

The Port of Townsville has marked another achievement in its $193 million Channel Upgrade project, with the joining of the eastern and western sides of a 2.2km rock wall.

The rock wall, being built by Hall Contracting, will form a protective bund around a 62ha Port Reclamation Area that will kickstart the Port’s seaward expansion.

A Port of Townsville spokeswoman said a team of designers, engineers, environmental experts and contractors had recently completed stage one and two works, with the third and final stage now underway.

“The joining of the wall has presented the Port of Townsville with the unique challenge of safely removing marine wildlife from the area bound by the walls,” she said.

“It is an ongoing task being carried out in consultation with leading marine wildlife experts from multiple agencies until the wall is complete.”

Construction of the rock wall is the critical first step in widening Townsville’s shipping channel to improve access for larger vessels and to prepare for three-fold trade growth by 2050.

The rock wall is due for completion by early 2021 and the Channel Upgrade project is on track for completion in 2023.
