Lucas Drilling has won a $70 million contract to provide Kestrel Coal with degasification and exploration drilling services.
The contract is for an initial three-year period, with an option to extend for a further two years by mutual agreement.
Lucas says the contract extends an existing long-term working relationship with kestrel, where Lucas currently supplies six rigs supported by up to 100 staff.
The Kestrel mine, about 50km north-east of Emerald, is owned by Kestrel Coal Resources and Mitsui Investments.
Kestrel Coal Resources is a private company owned by EMR Capital of Australia and PT Adaro Energy of Indonesia, which joined forces to acquire Rio Tinto’s 80 per cent share in the coal mine last year.
Lucas Drilling chief executive officer Brett Tredinnick said the new Kestrel contract, combined with other recent contract wins and extensions, provided the business with a solid multi-year order book.
