Construction work is about 70 per cent complete on a new 22ha recreational lake precinct at Hughenden, with Cairns-based Cheshire Contractors carrying out earthworks.
Flinders Shire director of engineering Hari Boppudi said the project was expected to be completed by September next year.
As well as the earthworks required to create the lake, extensive landscaping was required to finish the $8 million project, he said.
“This is a major project for a council of this size and it has been a dream of the community for more than 15 years,” he said.
The lake is being funded through a $4.1 million infrastructure grant from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) along with a council contribution.
The new recreational lake will be within the Station Creek catchment, adjacent to the eastern edge of the Hughenden township and south of the Hughenden Showgrounds.
