Cairns Regional Council has approved a $6.6 million refurbishment of the historic city courthouse, with Vis Constructions awarded a $4.1 million construction contract.
The heritage-listed Cairns Courthouse building was purchased by the council in 2016, when with the intent to use the restored building as a public event and exhibition space as part of a proposed Cairns Gallery Precinct.
The council has also given the green light for construction of a $2.8 million roof over the Cairns International Tennis Centre’s centre court to allow for year-round and all weather play.
The structure will allow elite level play on centre court for the annual Cairns International Pro Tour tournament, as well as potential future international events, including Davis Cup or Fed Cup matches.
Richard Field Constructions has been awarded the construction contact.
A council spokesman said the projects had attracted funding under the Australian Government’s Regional Jobs and Investment Package; $2.1 million for the courthouse refurbishment and $998,000 for the tennis centre roof.
