John Glanville has been appointed to the position of chair elect of the Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3), a new regional economic development group in central Queensland.
Cr Anne Baker, Chair of the Whitsunday Regional Organisation of Councils welcomed Mr Glanville to the position.
“John demonstrated to the selection panel that he was the person to take GW3 forward. I wish to also acknowledge and thank the other applicants. We received very high quality applications from a number of well qualified people,” she said.
The Whitsunday ROC – made up of the councils of Isaac, Whitsunday and Mackay – has been working actively since April 2016 to determine the best way forward for a regional approach to economic development.
They looked at the Mackay Whitsunday Regional Economic Development Corporation (commonly called REDC) which was mothballed in 2014 and deliberated on the most appropriate path to form a regional group.
This lead to the recent announcement that the Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3) would be developed as an economic development entity working for the region. MWREDC will be transformed into the new entity with constitutional changes and rebranding.
Mr Glanville said his main goal would be to get the new body working for industry in the region and to take it to the next stage of development.
“We need to get this region on the map, to make people sit up and take notice of the Whitsunday region and what it has to offer,” he said.
“If this can be achieved then the added benefits of job retention and creation will be a major boost for the region.”
Mr Glanville has been a member of the Mackay business scene for more than 23 years, becoming a significant player in the car sales industry when he took on a retail franchise in the Autocorner dealership. He recently sold the business and said he had been searching for ways he could give back to the community.
The chair elect will become the chair of GW3 at a meeting of the entity in the New Year. Recruitment is under way for directors and a chief executive officer.
The GW3 office will be based in Mackay but will serve the Greater Whitsunday Region.
“We hope to announce the new CEO and Board members in coming weeks,” Cr Baker said.
