The Queensland Investment Corporation is spending $6 million to expand Townsville’s Domain Central shopping centre in Garbutt.
Treasurer Curtis Pitt said the new investment was a great vote of confidence in the Townsville region.
“Around 60 local jobs will be created during the construction phase through builders and subcontractors and another 50 jobs provided on project completion, including retail staff, cleaners, and security,” he said.
“Most importantly, it will provide new job opportunities in Townsville as QIC will be contracting local builders and actively supporting the employment of locals.”
The planned redevelopment will add more than 1100sq m of floor space, including a new convenience-style IGA, six new retail spaces and additional amenities including toilets and a new bus stop.
Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Domain Central is the largest homemaker lifestyle and outlet shopping centre in Queensland and was acquired by QIC in July 2015.
QIC is a Queensland Government-owned corporation that manages over $79 billion on behalf of 100 Australian and international clients.
