Laying 109 blocks in 20 minutes was not enough to make the winners’ podium for two Central Queensland men taking on a Fastest Trowel on the Block challenge in Las Vegas.
Brothers Jack and Pat Sommerfeld of Mackay represented Australia in the contest during the 3rd annual Mason Contractors Association of America Convention.
The pair, trained by CQUniversity bricklaying teacher Peter Carr in Rockhampton, have previously won regional competitions of WorldSkills and will represent Queensland in the WorldSkills nationals in Melbourne this year.
Mr Carr said the competition in Las Vegas marked bricklayers on the accuracy of each course of blocks laid as well as getting the largest number of concrete masonry blocks laid in the 20-minute time frame.
Central Queensland University merged with CQ TAFE in 2014, taking on board vocational courses such as bricklaying.
