Burdekin Shire Council is aware that a fraudulent request for tender using Council’s logo is currently being sent to local businesses via email.
Council advises that this is not an official request for tender and is likely a scam.
Council warns all residents against opening the email attachment and to exercise caution in opening any emails from unrecognised email addresses.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) advises to look for the following clues when spotting a fake document:
- generic rather than personal greeting;
- names of organisations that don’t exist;
- poorer quality presentation;
- poorer quality grammar and spelling; and
- overly official or forced language.
If you are in doubt about the authenticity of an email that you receive from Council, you can phone the Customer Service Centre to verify on (07) 4783 9800 8am-5pm Monday to Friday.
