RPC Technologies has been awarded a tender for a $900,000-plus improvement project on the Horseshoe Bay wastewater treatment plant at Magnetic Island.
Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said the project would support up to 30 jobs, including local electrical and civil contractors.
“This is a highly specialised project with no local suppliers available, so the evaluation considered not only the best value for money for the ratepayers, but also the engagement of local subcontractors where possible,” Cr Hill said.
“This project will provide RPC and their subcontractors substantial work over six months, which is one way council can support our local businesses during any downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
RPC will upgrade the odour control unit and undertaking remediation works.
Townsville Water and Waste Committee chair Russ Cook said the technology that RPC would be using was a bio-trickling filter to break down the odour causing pollutants and was an eco-friendly option.
