Work has started on a staged $3.25 million upgrade of Ingham Rd intersections in Townsville to improve traffic flow and heavy vehicle safety in the Bohle Industrial Area.
The work, to be completed in three stages, has kicked off with the construction of a new dual lane roundabout at the Ingham Rd, Western and Everett St intersections.
Construction is expected to be completed mid year.
Townsville City Council’s Infrastructure Committee chairman Cr Mark Molachino said the project would make Ingham Rd safer for the increased traffic flow through the busy industrial area.
“The Bohle industrial area has grown in recent years with many more warehouses and workshops locating to the area,” Cr Molachino said.
“Heavy vehicle traffic has increased as a result and the upgrades will greatly improve road safety for everyone accessing what is the city’s an important industrial hub in the city.”
Road closures will be in place during the upgrade which will include the constructions of a new roundabout and installation of lighting and undergrounding of services.
Local firm Mendi Constructions won the construction contract for Stage 1.
Future stages include the upgrade of intersections with Enterprise Street and Webb Drive.
The council project has attracted funding from the State Government Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme and the Federal Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, and will be completed over three financial years.
