Construction starts on JCU Technology Innovation Complex An official ‘turning of the first sod’ has marked the start of construction on the $94 million JCU Technology Innovation Complex (TIC) in Townsville. Led by major contractor BESIX Watpac, the project is expected to create about 300 construction jobs, with at least 80 per cent of subcontractors and suppliers locally sourced. James Cook University describes the planned four-storey TIC (image below) as the centrepiece of an innovation hub in which undergraduate and postgraduate engineering and IT students, industry partners and researchers will converge and collaborate. Works for Queensland backs $980,000 resurfacing job Gladstone Regional Council has been successful in securing $980,000 in Works for Queensland funding to conduct road resurfacing along Captain Cook Drive, from Agnes Water to Seventeen Seventy. The resurfacing work started this week and will be carried out between 52 Captain Cook Drive and the Agnes Water Waste Transfer Station, with expected completion 30 May 2021. The project includes repair, renewal and upgrade of existing road surfaces which provide access to residential, business and commercial networks and infrastructure. Major sewer main relining project in Townsville Townsville City Council has started relining a 1km section of the sewerage main beneath Nathan St in Cranbrook and Heatley this week. Council water and waste committee chairperson Russ Cook said the $730,000 project would ensure that the gravity sewer main could continue to function for many years into the future. “Townsville City Council has committed to spending more than $23 million this financial year to construct new and upgrade existing water and wastewater infrastructure across our suburbs to ensure that residents continue to receive a quality service,” Cr Cook said. “This relining will reduce the risk of any water leaks or failures from the aging pipeline as it ages, protecting residential properties and Council’s assets.” Bridge opening as Rokwood Weir works continue Representatives from three levels of government have marked the official opening of the $12.5 million Riverslea Bridge at the Rookwood Weir project in Central Queensland. Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said building the bridge had provided jobs for more than 30 Central Queenslanders and concrete for the bridge was sourced from Humes, a Rockhampton-based contractor. "This $12.5 million investment from the Federal Government will make such a difference as it replaces the existing crossing which would have otherwise been inundated when Rookwood Weir reaches full supply," she said. School upgrades bring CQ trades work Local tradies will be busy with almost $6 million worth of new contracts over two months on Central Queensland schools, supporting 15 jobs. Assistant Education Minister and Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the contracts awarded in March and April were part of the State Government’s multi-million-dollar Budget action plan for Central Queensland. “The CQ Regional Action Plan includes $52.4 million to maintain, improve and upgrade schools – including significant projects in my own electorate of Keppel,” she said. New CQ contracts awarded in March and April include: a $1.1 million science block at Yeppoon State High School, almost $1.13 million at Emu Park State School for a new amenities block and a lift to classrooms, $1.1 million to replace two amenities blocks and transpiration pits Keppel Sands State School, a $935,000 project at Yeppoon State School to convert classrooms for a science, technology and maths and an early childhood development program, a $1.37 million new building with two learning spaces at Emerald State High School, a $324,500 build at Crescent Lagoon State School will deliver equitable access to amenities and Block B learning centre, a $550,000 project will replace existing amenities at Longreach State School.
