Collinsville is celebrating 100 years of mining with a weekend of activities, including tours of the town’s heritage-listed No. 1 Mine after recent restoration work.
Glencore will offer free bus tours taking in the old Bowen Consolidated Coal Mine No.1 site as well as the operating Collinsville open-cut mine and the Coalface Experience on Saturday (October 12), followed by an afternoon of family events at the showground.
The 100-year celebrations co-incide with the weekend of the annual Collinsville Miners Memorial Day.
The memorial event is held on the anniversary day each year of the State Mine Disaster of October 13, 1954 in which seven underground miners died.
Glencore also funded work this year by the Collinsville Connect Telecentre to re-paint old murals and install new art, a work depicting the town’s famous pit ponies, commemorating the 100-year milestone.
