Christmas Q&A – Sam Rodda

Christmas Q&A – Sam Rodda

Sam Rodda is the general manager of MMG’s Dugald River Mine in North West Queensland. He joined iQ for a quick Christmas Q&A….

What was the greatest achievement or advance in your industry/organisation in the past year?  Our site team delivering mining and processing volumes above original design and expectation in the first full year of commercial production at Dugald River.

What was the greatest challenge or failing in your industry/organisation in the past year?  The greatest challenge continues to be the attraction and retention of great people during a buoyed mine labour market. It’s important we continue to develop our people and provide opportunity for experienced and new people into our industry.

What are your goals and expectations for 2020? Our goal is to continue towards operating a safe, injury-free workplace, we will be looking to simplify our approach to safety and production to deliver improved performance in both in 2020.

How will you be spending the Christmas/New Year period?  Our site will continue through the holiday period. A big thank you to everyone who is working this Xmas season.  For myself, after working last year, I get the chance to spend some time at home with my wife and children this Xmas.

What is the worst/funniest Christmas present you have ever received (or given)?  I am still scarred from a number of years receiving socks and tennis balls (I played a bit of junior tennis). After 10 years of the same present the fun wears off quick…

What is your favourite Christmas or New Year memory or tradition?  I have enjoyed a Xmas Turkey on the BBQ regularly as well as a well ‘dosed’ Xmas cake.
