Peabody Energy will shut down production at two Bowen Basin coal operations for four weeks over Christmas.
The company has briefed the workforce of the plan to temporarily idle production at Coppabella and Moorvale mines, and they will be able to access paid leave for the period.
“Like most other Australian mining operators, Peabody has been affected by challenging global economic conditions in 2020,” a company spokeswoman said.
“While a slow global recovery is underway, coal demand and pricing remain under pressure.
“We have made the decision to temporarily idle production at our Coppabella and Moorvale mine complex across Christmas.
“We’ve openly communicated with our teams and we thank them for their ongoing commitment to their mine.”
Glencore has taken similar measures across its coal operations during the year, including temporary shutdowns at its Newlands and Collinsville coal operations to co-incide with the September school holidays.
