DriveIT NQ has signed a $2.6 million construction contract with BMD Townsville for civil works on its planned driver education and motorsport facility.
A tender notice went out in November for civil contractors to work on Stage 1 of DriveIT NQ’s $25 million project at Calcium outside Townsville.
The BMD contract covers an internal all-weather access road, a 2.4ha vehicle manoeuvring area (a skid pan) and associated works such as drainage.
DriveIt NQ chairman Greg Fitzgerald said the work was expected to begin next month and take 12-16 weeks to complete.
The DriveIT NQ Motorsport and Driver Education Facility aims to provide a safe venue for an array of motor sports. However the prime focus will be provision of driver education and training.
Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper said a planned intersection upgrade that would support the establishment of DriveIT NQ’s facility and other Lansdown Industrial Precinct developments had been fast-tracked.
“Last year we announced $5 million in funding to advance the intersection upgrade to the site at the Woodstock intersection,” he said.
The project will involve construction of an acceleration lane on the Flinders Highway north of the Woodstock-Giru Road intersection. RoadTek is expected to start construction in the third quarter of this year with work to be finished by late 2020.
