All systems go for silo after $3.5m rebuild

Contractor Walz Group has completed work on a $3.5 million coal silo refurbishment project at Queensland Alumina Limited, Gladstone.

Almost 160 tonnes of scaffolding was employed during the six-month project to bring one of four QAL coal silos back into commission.

“The completion of the Coal Silo 2 project is an important milestone for us,” QAL general manager Pine Pienaar said.

“We were pleased to be able to partner with local contractors to complete this work safely”.

Being able to use the additional silo, which holds 2000 tonnes of coal, reduces the need to hold coal – used to fire the QAL boilers – in open stockpiles.

The project included extensive rebuilding of the decommissioned silo, repairs to the walls, and painting it inside and out.
