Rockhampton Regional Council has approved a multi-use commercial development on Yaamba Road, Park Avenue which will include the second Aldi store for Rockhampton.
The 5600sq m development will include three retail shops, two showrooms and a service station with food and drink outlets as well as 300 car parks.
“The developers predict 200 jobs during the construction period which will be a mix of direct and direct jobs, and then 180 once all stores are operational. This is exactly what our region needs,” Mayor Margaret Strelow said.
It follows council’s approval of an Aldi Southside store in May.
Aldi says its has identified strong demand in Queensland and has recently opened a number of stores including Gladstone, Inala, Bargara, Redbank Plains, Brassall and Urangan.
The grocery giant plans to open stores in Drewvale, Maroochydore (Sunshine Cove), Caboolture and Coorparoo before the end of 2017, and has submitted development applications for stores in Toowoomba, Dalby and two sites in Rockhampton.
“In addition to these locations, we are also working towards opening stores in The Gap, Hope Island and North Lakes in 2018,” a company spokeswoman said.
