Awards celebrate high achievers of housing

Queensland builder BJ Millar Constructions has won this year’s HIA–CSR Australian Home of the Year award.

And a house in Cairns was named the HIA-CSR Australian People’s Choice Home.

The 2020 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards were announced online for the first time in HIA history due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The winning home – overlooking the Gold Coast’s Coomera River – is described as a sophisticated nod to brutalist architecture and tropical modernism (main photo and above).

Masterfully crafted with an extraordinary level of customised detail, the living space is based around lush, open-air garden atriums.

The home also won HIA Australian Custom Built Home.

A partnership between North Queensland’s MyStyle Homes (Qld) and Kim Duffin Design took out HIA Australian Bathroom Design (above) and HIA Australian Kitchen Design awards.

The Cairns home these projects are located in also collected the only category voted by the Australian public – the HIA-CSR Australian People’s Choice Home – bringing the total win for MyStyle Homes (Qld) to three awards.

The winning kitchen is set beneath a large void and is a refined solution for the home’s tropical location.

“Extensive workspaces and amenity ensures this incredible kitchen is equally liveable and practical,” the judges commented.

HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards winners are selected from state-based finalists, with awards in 22 separate categories including Professional Builders, display home, apprentice, bathrooms and kitchens (see full list below).
